How Many Hours Do You Need? The number of continuing competency hours required for the license renewal cycle depends on the issuance date of your license: If you were licensed PRIOR to December 31, 2008, you are required to have completed the following per three (3) year cycle by your license expiration date: One (1) hour covering building codes and laws related to the licensed occupation. One (1) hour covering safety. One (1) hour covering changes in construction and business management laws. If you were licensed AFTER to January 1, 2009, you are required to have completed the following by your license expiration date: Three (3) hours minimum of continuing competency per year during the first six (6) years of license issuance. A total of twenty-one (21) hours per three (3) year cycle by your license expiration date for that cycle consisting of: o One (1) hour covering building codes and laws related to the licensed occupation o One (1) hour covering safety. o One (1) hour covering changes in construction and business management laws. o Eighteen (18) additional hours covering "other topics".
